Patients often have questions about Invisalign treatment in Victoria BC and how it differs from traditional metal braces. They have questions about not only how long it takes to complete treatment but how soon they will see results during treatment. Invisalign has been around since the late 1990’s and is still considered a very innovative method to straighten teeth. In the blog below we will address some of the common questions about the differences between Invisalign and traditional metal braces.
Overall Timeline For Invisalign Treatment
Invisalign treatments are tailored to correct the individual needs of each patient so their timeline will vary as well. When you sign up for Invisalign treatment the length of time to complete treatment could be shorter or longer than another patient. As a general rule it can take between 12 and 18 months, of course there are always exceptions which means your treatment could be shorter or longer.
How Long Before You See Results
The way Invisalign treatment is designed to gradually move your teeth closer together is a very gradual process. It’s happens very slowly and could take awhile before you see any results and some patients have seen results in as little as 2 weeks. Another patient may not notice any difference for 3 months, and because each person is unique it can be as long as 5 months before there is visible improvement. If after 5 months you feel there are no changes book an appointment with your Orthodontist or dentist to check on your progress. Most patients find that patience and having faith in your Invisalign treatment will yield satisfactory results.
Which Is Faster Invisalign or Braces?
Traditional braces work faster in the short term, the reason for that is they work in a more random manner than Invisalign aligners. Braces apply pressure to all the teeth including your straight ones and have been pressured into moving from their proper position. They will later return to their original position a process is known as “ round tipping. “ Invisalign is designed to move only misaligned teeth and does not change the position of any of the straight teeth. Results may take longer to notice with Invisalign but as treatment progresses the results will become more dramatic. The Invisalign treatment works in a more efficient manner and results are faster in the long term.
How Long Will I Wear Each Set Of Aligners
In general you will wear each set for 2 weeks, the way your treatment plan works is a prescribed sequence to slowly move your teeth into a new position. Every set must be worn for the necessary length of time to move teeth into the correct position while not moving your straight teeth. To avoid extending treatment be sure to wear each set of Invisalign aligners for the full 2 weeks as prescribed by your Dentist or Orthodontist. You will be told to wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day, failing to follow the treatment plan can slow the pace of your treatment plan.
