Does acupuncture help weight loss

The number of Americans who are overweight has reached such high numbers that one quarter of Americans are overweight. Diabetes and heart disease are the result of this unhealthy weight, more children are being diagnosed with diabetes at a younger age than ever before. While struggling to lose the excess pounds they spend over 33 billion dollars on weight loss programs. So ineffective are these programs that 85% fail to shed the excess pounds, often regaining all the lost weight and more. Medical acupuncture is not something people may have considered and can help you lose the extra, unhealthy weight.

What is acupuncture

If you have never tried or heard of acupuncture it is a practice used in traditional Chinese medicine and has been around for centuries. It involves the insertion of a very fine, sterile needle at specific body points or energy pathways. The inserted needles act to stimulate the release of endorphins, the body’s natural, feel good hormones. Endorphins create a calming, relaxing effect which counteracts the need for excessive eating brought about by increased stress, frustration or anxiety. In this respect acupuncture can calm stress afflicted individuals and help them lose weight without using drugs.

How does it help

Studies have shown when used in conjunction with traditional weight loss methods, patients lose more weight. Often the trigger to overeat is emotionally driven so being calm and relaxed is helpful in reaching their goals. In these cases 1 to 3 sessions can be safe and effective in helping most people achieve reasonable weight loss. Traditional Chinese medicine believes excessive weight gains are caused mainly by an imbalance in the body due to a malfunction in the spleen and liver organ systems.

Skilled practitioners

A skilled acupuncture practitioner will zero in on specific body areas to affect weight loss so be sure you visit one who is very qualified. Among those areas are the endocrine system and kidneys which are addressed to treat water retention. And to stimulate nerve and hormonal rebalancing the spleen and thyroid are thought to affect sugar and hormonal imbalances .Finally the adrenal and ovary glands are included to treat weight gain due to menopause or PMS.( pre menopause syndrome, Some patients see results quickly and only need to have a treatment once every two weeks. Another method used is ear stapling, by manipulating points on the ear to control food cravings, combined with a 2000 calorie diet and daily 15 minute walk to reduce weight. Acupuncture is a painless method used to combat nicotine cravings in those who wish to stop smoking and can be used to reach your weight loss goals.

Visit a acupuncture in Toronto if you live in that area and are worried about your weight.

Greek God Vs Oikos Yougurt

This blog post will be an article and comparison of Green God vs Oikos Greek Yougurt.

The reason why is because Greek Yogurt is very trendy right now. Kind of like how Yam fries were all the rage a few years ago. Or even the bacon trend. Seriously, bacon is all over the place right now.

But it seems like the greek yogurt trend will not end soon. I know it’s a big stable in my diet. For good reason as it’s really, really good. Addicting one might say.

However, not all Greek yogurt is created equal. A few brands have far too many calories in them. Calories are so important to the diet.

If you don’t know by now, my personal story is littered with poor eating habits. Within the last few months though I sought out the help of a personal trainer and focused on calorie intake and output.

Labels Are Your Friend

Today when I was in the grocery store I decided to compare a few yogurt labels to each other. My personal trainer recommended Oikos by Danone. After comparing to it couple of other brands of Greek Yogurt, I now know why!

The picture above is Oikos Coconut vs Greek God Honey. I use to eat a lot of the Greek God Honey a few years back. It’s even better than Oikos but as you see from the label, it’s not that healthiest.

So now to compare the two yogurts head to head.

Greek God Vs Oikos

First off you will notice Greek God is per 125 Grams as compared to 175 for the Oikos. It’s always important to be aware of the serving size per measurement figure. Often times companies will put a lower measurement to make their labels read better. But as you can see, it’s still way higher across the board than the Oikos.

To get them on the same level we have to times the serving size of the Greek God by 40%.

The next thing and most obvious is the amount of calories. The Greek God has 252 calories per 175 grams vs just 150 calories for the Oikos. Oikos wins this battle.

The fat content for the Greek God is through the roof. 11 grams vs 0. Oikos wins again.

The carbs battle goes to Greek God. Greek God has 20.4 grams of carbs while Oikos has 23.

The sugar intake is very close. 20 grams to 19 for Oikos. I’ll admit that that is not ideal on boths sides. If you choose regular Greek Yogurt from both brands, you’ll find a lower amount of sugar. On a side note, check out Sugar Stacks for a visual idea of how many cubes of sugar 19 looks like.

The biggest battle is for the protein.

Protein is so important for anyone no matter if you are trying to lose or grain weight. Your body needs it and yogurt is once source it can get it from. By looking at the labels Oikos has double the amount of Greek God. Greek God has 7 grams while Oikos has 14.

So there you have my Greek God vs Oikos Greek Yogurt comparision. In the next blog post I’m going to compare Liberte against Oikos. Stay tuned for that!

Ways To Control Calorie Intake

A few months back I decided to seek out the help of a personal trainer. I talked about that in my last post.

Things have been going great and I’m down an extra 20 pounds

That it because he’s also a nutrionalist. Most personal trainers just work with you in the gym. But by know you should know it’s 80% proper nutrition and 20% exercise and weight training.

If you don’t know, well, now you know!

Seriously, I am living proof of that ratio. I use to slug away at the gym, then eat a very calorie heavy diet full of carbs and processed foods. Just because Subway has veggies, doesn’t mean it’s not loaded with calories and processed meats.

After eating lots of what I thought were healthy foods and not losing any weight, I started getting into eat fresh cooked meals that I made for myself.

But as I am about to explain in a minute, this never equated to lose pounds.

Here’s why.

What Is Healthy Eating?

During my initial consult with my trainer he asked me what I ate.

I replied with “Well, I eat pretty healthy. I eat a lot of chicken and veggies along with protein shakes.”

He then asked me what I put in my shakes and how I prepared my chicken and veggies. I said I made salads with a couple of slices of bacon, an avocado, yellow peppers, tomatoes, spinach salad cucumbers and a whole chick breast.

My shakes had two scoops of protein, a banana, a handful of blueberries, a few strawberries.

This is where he really nailed me and my epiphany occurred!

He asked me if I had an idea how many calories those examples had? I had no idea. I mean, I was eating healthy right!

I was eating healthy alight but both meals were loaded with calories. He guessed that the salad probably had 800-1000 calories while the shake was around 600.

Based on my calorie intake to output ratio, I was already hitting my 1600 calorie limit daily with those two meals.

Measure Everything

And this is where he showed me that I really needed to dial in my calorie intake by measuring everything.

He bough me a scale so I can weigh the chicken breast. He also introduced me to this site which lists all the nutrition from just about every food in North America.

These two things really helped me dial in a nutrition plan and get my calorie intake balanced.

Once you know what your food has in terms of calories, you can then create a balanced plan to keep you fueled all day.

And that is important. Calories should be looked at as energy and not a bad thing.

Anyways, I’ll be back next week with a post on watching out for power foods and why you shouldn’t worry about fat in foods.
